Thanks to all who attended our "informal" 45th Reunion. It was great seeing folks I had not seen since the last Reunion, or even longer. Despite my lack of golfing ability, it sure was a good time. Dennis won't soon forget my looking for my sunglasses. See ya at the 50th. Gerry

Bob Stevens, who was part of the Class of 65 until our senior year, attended our 45th class reunion. Bob donated a laptop to the class. The laptop was raffled off during our Saturday evening gathering. Lyle Stuart is the lucky classmate who won the computer! Thanks very much, Bob, for your generosity!

Hello organizers: Just a quick note to let you know that I will not be able to attend the reunion. I managed to break my leg on the 4th of July. So I am going to stay home and keep working on getting better. I broke the femur bone so I managed to do it up right. I was really looking forward to seeing everyone. Maybe sometime in this lifetime I will actually be able to attend. Wish all well and much enjoyment.

Hey Colleran's & everyone - we're looking for people for the "Drag Euclid" - people from our past - like Mr. Lonbakken to ride in a car, the former Corral car hops, Johnny of the Standard Station - we may even have some fill ins for our Homecoming royalty ??. If anyone knows somebody from our "past" glory days, call them up and invite them to be part of this - be at the Legion on Sunday afternoon at 11 am and join us for the picnic. If you're looking for ways to help out on Saturday, we'll be at the American Legion making posters in the afternoon. Anyone that has memorabilia - bring that - I'm bringing a couple of scrap books - now, what will we find? & Wear your T-shirts! Looking forward to a great time!

From Dana: Hi Guys, Unhappily I won't be able to make it this time. We just had a big reunion in Vivian a couple weeks ago plus another get together in Pierre that same weekend. All 6 of my brothers and sisters and I made the trip back from Washington. It was greenest and prettiest I have ever seen Montana, & Wyoming, and of course South Dakota is always gorgeous. I am going to be back in NYC and DC visiting my kids and grand children during our class reunion. I'll be there for the great class of '65's 50th, which unfortunately will be here sooner than we might like it to be. I got the letter for the reunion while in Vivian so the strategy for sending it there worked. I am sorry to miss the golf tournament and other festivities. Thank you all for all the work you do organizing and planning the reunions. You definitely deserve some atta boys and atta girls for that. Take care and keep me posted. Dana

Just thought the class of '65 would want to know the following: On Sunday, June 20, Phil Hanson underwent a six hour surgery to repair a couple of arteries, an aortic one in the abdomen and another artery in the groin area, that burst while he was at a grandson's baseball game in Brandon. The doctors said he shouldn't have made it on to the ambulance since 65% of those people that have this happen to them never make it to the ambulance. They also said that 90% of those that make it to the hospital never make it through the operation so statistically he shouldn't have survived the operation. While on the operating table, another artery burst up by his lungs!!! But the good news is that Phil has survived all of this, is doing great, and looks like he will be going home on July 1st or 2nd! The doctors and nurses are calling Phil their miracle patient. Phil can be reached at pg7hanson@msn.com . Rich Shangreaux, Riggs High Class of '67

Dear Get Connected Team - Ducey, Thanks for your quick response and remembering me even though I did not graduate with you all. Cudos for Larry, you are so right, he does a wonderful job. I did my junior and senior years at, and graduated from Augustana Academy in Canton SD. It is a Lutheran school south of Sioux Falls. The school closed its doors a few years later and the State took it over for an alcoholic rehab facility for mainly Indians. I will scan my senior pic from the "Saga" and email it. My graduating class consisted of only 58 students. For classmates who don't remember me, maybe you remember my dad, Dr. Illig. He was the only M.D. eye doctor/surgeon in Pierre for many years and his office was across the street from the Pierre National Bank, next to Spargur's hardware store. When I look at the class pictures and see the guys with their cool heavy rim glasses, and the girls with their cat-eye specs, I cannot help but wonder how many originated from his eye clinic. It is wonderful to be in touch again after 40 years as I do remember so many of you.

We did scan all the senior photos from the Gumbo. Click on Photo on the Main Menu. The Graduation Photos are the first menu item once you click on Photo. They are arranged alphabetically. Click on the photo itself and it will show you the name of the person. Check out the "now and thens" too. We'd like to hear from the rest of you lurkiloos.

I don't have a "Gumbo" because I did not graduate with you guys, I was at Riggs only as a sophomore and then moved to Canton SD. I did, however go to school with the class of '65 since seventh grade to end of 10th, or 4 years. It would be really nice if you put on the website the class pictures from the "Gumbo" so that others like me, too could see them to help refresh our memories. Perhaps the senior pictures pages scanned would be great. I really enjoyed lurking your site, brought back wonderful memories and reminded me of the value of having grown up in a small town and Capital at the same time. Your site is very good and I hope it will continue to give us all great pleasure. Arno Illig

The dedication was amazing - I am so proud of Pierre and all the hard work that went into making that happen. I am a huge Big and Rich fan, and to see/hear them sing that song about our era just makes me so proud that I grew up there and realize how much it changed the entire world. I saw Sally - literally ran into her, Ron Lutz, Nancy Neiber and her sister Mary Larscheid Christensen - who I haven't seen for 40 years - Jane Hoover - she looks just like she did in high school. I didn't go to the concerts - I should have - I thought because I've seen them in venues in LA that I wouldn't spend the $$$, I listened to them from Barb's front porch - we had fun singing along - was upset that I wasn't there. Sally said it was really fun and they (Dennis Douglas, Patty Kifer, Gaylord partied into the am. I saw Art and Alta White - that brought back so many great memories my Mom getting her hair done at Alta's and buying shoes from Art at Bert's. We should all go back more and hang out together - & tell stories, and pals, I've got stories. Speaking of new stories, Lyssa Shadrick Bingman and I are spending a few days in Vegas starting November 6th - we're going to catch up, drink Mango martinis at Mandalay Bay, crepes for breakfast at Paris, Celine Dion. So, if you're in the area - we'll be at the Monte Carlo- when you hear the screaming - it's me and Lys. Now - go vote on November 7th - I sat at that dedication thinking about the war in Iraq - the parallels - we have got to change the direction of this country on whatever level we can. Don't sit around and talk about what's wrong - make changes -either party - they haven't done their job - make them accountable - this is screwed up and evidentially I'm not the only one who's I'm sick of it. My best regards to all of you, Pen

Hi Kay, I understand your frustration about not receiving the memory booklet yet. You are correct in that two bike rallies have passed and also well over a year in time has passed. You are not alone in your comments and requests. Paul Mitchell is the person in charge of the memory booklet and of completing and mailing the memory booklet. For over a year now he has indicated that it will be done soon. Actually we are all in the dark about what has taken so long for such a simple little memory booklet to be completed. Jerry Brink was in Rapid this summer (for Paul's wedding) and he said he checked on the status of the booklet and it was near done. Nice of Jerry to check on that for all of us, but really it is the same old story we all have been hearing for well over a year now. You are not alone is wondering why this project has not been completed. I hear from many classmates on a regular basis and I keep telling Paul that we need the booklet done.Perhaps you can e-mail Paul a note and see what he has to say to you personally. I think we need to bring closure to the project in one form or another. I will look into refunding money because obviously the project is not done as promised. Hope all is well with you and your family.

Hey everyone, sounds like each of you is having a grand time, Vacations and retirements, all good. I just read the comments about the memory book. I have not received mine yet and it is September 24,2006 The bike rally has been over twice and so my response to the memory book is: I want my money back! I have signed up to get the directory from the Riggs High Education Foundation. It probably will not have pictures in it, but the information should be up to date. The money from the memory book will go to that purchase. Sorry Classmates, I have lost patience with the whole ordeal and only want to get it over with. The help was offered and apparently not taken. So hope to find all of you in the directory. Kay

Ok, I've been watching and listening to this memory book saga - Mitchell, cough up the book so it can get finished. Bottom line Paul: for whatever reason you've not been able to complete the book and you have lost your credibility with your classmates. Send the material or e-mail them to Janet and let us finish the book. Come on folks, we're too old to go through this kind of stuff anymore. I didn't make it to the reunion but I do conferences/events & the books that go with them to pay the bills and know that a couple of weeks should do it. I've offered Janet Neuharth to help get the book finished - it's going to cost all of you more money, but you'll have it in your hands. Let's get this over with - enough, no hard feelings - on my part anyway. Let's get on to our get together in September - and get past this. Penne

Hey All you classmates out there!! What's up? I have been busy with too many things, but I guess that is what happens in retirement. All of a sudden there is the same amount or less of things to do, but so much less time to do it in. Does that even make sense? Where does the time go? One of the things keeping me busy is trying to figure out why, oh why, Paul Mitchell has not yet produced our Memory Booklet. It has been almost a year now and still no booklet. I have had several e-mails and communications with Paul and he continually tells me that it will be in the mail in about a week or so......sometimes even giving me an exact date. Still no booklet. Paul was only suppose to make a booklet, not an entire Gumbo. He does however, continually tell me that this project is "just about done" and it will be bigger and better than ever. I say, "Just give us the booklet we ordered"!! If any of you are curious about where the memory booklet is or what is the status, I encourage you to e-mail Paul, and hopefully he will give you better information that I have been receiving. I for one apologize for this non-sense of no delivery of the booklet. Paul has been paid for the booklet and even given additional money, as he requested. The checks have been cashed, so we know he is using the money for something....hopefully the booklet. I hope that Paul has not scammed his fellow classmates!! I know many of you have written me and asked about the booklet, but I am now out of answers. Please write Paul and if he should respond, it would nice to share it with the rest of the classmates who are so patiently waiting for their memory booklets.

THE PIERRE GOVERNORS BASKETBALL TEAM WAS RATED #1 IN THE STATE AND WERE IN THE AA BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT IN RAPID CITY. THEY WON THE FIRST GAME BEATING MITCHELL, SECOND GAME BEATING BRANDON VALLEY AND HAD TO PLAY O'GORMAN HIGH SCHOOL AND LOST TO THEM IN THE LAST COUPLE OF MINUTES. HAD LEAD ALL THE WAY AND THEN CHOKED. OF COURSE, THE WHOLE TOWN OF PIERRE TURNED OUT FOR THE GAMES.

Don't want to lose this momentum for a get together in September. My sister has volunteered their place at 702 S. Washington to use their deck and facilities as action central. Parking available in front of the place - it's across the street from the Park; Jerry has a shop out by the airport with power that he's glad to have rigs parked out there, power gratis. No excuses for not showing up - I'm already checking flights - Lys and I are flying into Rapid and driving to Pierre and screaming all the way. So, sit down and hang on troops - !

just as an after thought regarding our trip. If anyone else is thinking on traveling as we did, a membership with AAA, AARP, a business affiliation, or a gov. ID are all valuable items for nice discounts at motels along the route. I was told by a desk clerk that depending on where you stay, savings of up to 15% per night are possible. Yep, you're right we didn't have'em.-

Mary and I certainly enjoyed having Jerry and his lovely bride Kris here for a visit. Other than relatives, Jerry was the first "old home" folk to visit. We had fun... I think someone told me that Cheryl and Dennis Renville come through ATL once in a while but I have never heard from them. Hmmm. BTW, Jerr, the butler quit the same day you left....something about "cheeseheads" and "disgusting". Ran away with the neighbor's daughter; awww you were probably just the excuse. Cheers!

HI ALL- we got home yesterday afternoon, both alive, broke, but happy. It was 15 days, 11 motel nights and a little over 3000 miles round trip. Have a lot of photos, some usable, some for mixed company and a few for the children. I'll try to pick those out and send them to Larry for the web site. Kris is so proud of me, we made the whole trip with nary a tantrum or melt-down on my part. Many thanks to George & Mary James. They gave up a week-end to totally dazzle us with a tour their corner of the world. It's our turn if you guys ever get to our part of the country. Just to let you know, we don't have a butler, you'll have to "slum" it.

I'm in for the September deal and hope I can reconnect with a lot of you I can't believe that us hotties from the class of '65 are nearly the same age as the Beach Boys. And yes, Penne, I am sure we know all the lyrics to their songs. I'm looking forward to a crazy weekend. If anybody is in the vicinity of Denver don't forget Colorado Springs is only 60 miles south. We have a couple of guest rooms that we hardly charge anything for. Just kidding, anyone would be welcome. Lyssa

Hi All Just checked in to the motel here in Branson, MO. The ice bucket is full, a cool frosty at hand and a huge desire to chat. Hope Larry hasn't gone out for the evening, as usual will probably need bailing out again. Yesterday was rain-rain-rain, today just the opposite, sun-sun-sun. We're sort of coming in on the home stretch, be here for a couple of nites, Springfield, MO (Bass Pro Shop) for a nite and then up to Kansas City for the week-end. We've a young niece and nephew that we haven't seen for 'way too long. We're looking at being home around Tues. next week. Oh ya, Bloom is really pushing for all who can to show up for the Vet's Memorial dedication in Pierre next Sept. Any that are interested, contact me, and I'll try to steer you to the right people. Am threatening a few pictures of this little escapade of ours, will fwd to Larry when the dust all settles. jerr

Kris and I wish to extend a very special thank-you to George and Mary James for the whirlwind weekend full of fun. This was a side trip of magnificent proportions. They hauled us nearly nonstop to places like Stone Mountain, downtown tours, dinner, lunch, and top of the heap was George's work place. Without burning up too much space, I'll just say that George has the best video game in town. Their home is located in a neighborhood that when you enter, makes you wish you'd washed the car and shined your shoes before you came in. The home they share can be best described as magnificent. I kept waiting for the butler to appear. Thanks again guys .Kris-n-Jerr

Hey Boocock - I got your e-mail - but I didn't get it - ha - I moved to Beaverton, OR 3.5 years ago to be close to my daughter and her husband, who works for Nike - their world headquarters is in Beaverton. I have four granddaughters with a 5th one on the way in July. Go to Pierre in Sept for the Vets memorial dedication, I'll be there from the 14th - 18th. Would love to see you, glad to be in touch again. I'm trying to get Lyssa to get there - Ducey tells me Pierre expects 60,000 people to show up for the dedication and THE BEACH BOYS are doing a concert - ye gads, those guys are older than we are - but I'll bet we know all the words to all the songs, huh? Big Ducey just alerted me that I should be using the comments section, not the blog section - so hang on, here goes. We are serious about this "Ladies of 60 - the new 40" get together in the summer 2007 - considering the Spearfish Canyon Lodge before the August bike rally. Get to Pierre to support our Vietnam Vets on the 15th & 16th of September. I'm there, Ducey, Shadrick, we'll meet you at the Legion Cabin on Friday, September 14th - smells like a party to me. I'm sorry I didn't get back for the reunion, but I'm all over Sept '06 and summer '07 - Hoffman, Shadrick, Ducey and me all all confirmed, so let's get on this ladies. Think of the stories we can tell - come on Brink, you should be good for getting at least 50 people there, the Lindekugels know we're coming. Let's make this a BIG showing for our guys! Till then, Bloomer

Ducey filled me in, I got on the South Dakota website - I'm there - come on, smells like a party to me. Let's get this website going again - I'm especially bored this time of year, with lots of stories to tell - who's with me? Penne said @ 02/01/2006 02:35 PM" So how about everyone meeting in Pierre somewhere that weekend, a time and place to be decided (such as the lawn at the Legion). We could all troop to the dedication and the Beach Boy concert together. There are no hotel rooms left, but I'm sure we can find some willing relatives, etc. for accommodations. This will be informal, unofficial, and fun. Your thoughts???

Jerr's Fabulous Winter Holiday!! First day out; mirror fell off the windshield, motel had ants in the bathroom, toilet wouldn't work, and Kris tried to drink the waffle batter at breakfast. Second nite we're at Oak Grove Ky., about 50 miles from Nashville. It's about 800 miles from home to where we are today. Havin' an absolute ball. Can see why Lincoln moved to the White House. Illinois is worse that SD, ND and Iowa for being dull. Almost nothing till we got to Ky. This part of the country has possibilities, not as many as WI, but things are looking up- - -

It's been awhile since I checked in with the web site. I'm patiently waiting for the book to arrive, Paul! Just got back from the worst fishing trip I've ever been on. Fished for seven days from sun up to sun down and only caught two fish, I usually come home with fifteen. We were fishing for steelhead, ocean going rainbow trout for you flatlanders, they run from 10-20 lbs.The best thing that's happened to me lately is I became a grandpa, finally. Her name is Lindy Anne Schwenn, born Oct. 31,7# 4oz. and 19 inches long, and the cutest baby in the whole world. Someone said she looks just like me, without the beard. HA! NO really she is cute. The South Dakota Vietnam War Memorial web site is up and running. It is worth the visit! Just go to our Web link page. Its posted there. The Memorial dedication is the 15th and 16th of September, 2006, in Pierre. The Memorial will honor all vets who served in the military during the Vietnam era, whether in country or not. I hope you'll plan to attend the event next year. By the way, the Beach Boys and Credence Clearwater Revisited will be there too! When you go to the SD Vietnam War Memorial website, look for some familiar names under soldier's stories.
